August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month, and while it’s nice to highlight a widespread, yet taboo subject, we know that the emotional challenges associated with hair loss last year round. When it comes to hair loss, there is a lot of misinformation floating around the internet, so here is our no-bull take on things.
When talking about hair loss, most tend to think it is a male dominated issue. While there is some truth to that; men do tend to suffer from it more, women are not off the hook. Here are some of the figures.
Clearly, hair loss is not an estranged issue, but why is it so common? And what exactly causes it? There are some old wives’ tales that things such as washing your hair too much or wearing hats will make your hair fall out. Those claims are simply not true. Dr. Rina Allawh of Montgomery Dermatology says: “Scarring hair loss is typically as a result of an inflammatory process that causes formation of scar that prevents hair from growing. This may also be due to repeated trauma to the scalp, such as thermal damage. Non scarring processes include hormonally driven hair loss, autoimmune causes (such as lupus, alopecia areata), medication-induced, stress induced or post-surgical.” (Revian)
So aside from excessive heat treatment to the scalp, most topical irritation has little to no effect on hair loss. On the other hand, the hard to swallow reality is that 95% of male and female hair loss cases are caused by androgenic alopecia, commonly referred to as male (female) pattern baldness. Since androgenic hair loss is passed down genetically, it is unfortunately not preventable. But fret not. If you are not suffering from genetic androgenic hair loss but are experiencing some balding or thinning, there are a handful of lifestyle changes that could help. And if you are one of the 95%, safe and effective medical treatments are available. The best remedy for you is going to depend on the cause.
For example, it’s normal for women to lose hair after pregnancy due to the changing of hormones. This is called postpartum hair loss. Simply, over the course of time as your body reaches its normal hormonal balance, hair will begin to grow normally again.
Another clinical condition that may be the cause of hair loss is called Traction alopecia, and it is caused by over-styling and pulling the hair, resulting in the damaged hair follicles, leading to hair loss. In some cases, traction alopecia can result in permanent hair loss but can also be remedied with new hair care practices. Traction alopecia is most common in women who wear hair extensions or braids, which can pull on the hair and cause damage to the follicles.
It should also be noted that for men, hair loss can be cause by poor physical or mental health or any of the following:

One of the best remedies for dry skin, dull hair and brittle nails might already be in your cupboards! No, it’s not another cream, powder or soap. It’s some of your favorite foods, and maybe some new ones you’ll love and that will love you back, giving you a healthy glow! We’re talking about protein!
Protein is one of the three main macronutrients that make up all foods, the other two being fat and carbohydrates. Each of the three have specific and important roles in the body and protein is the foundation. Protein is the building block of ALL organs, muscles, skin and even hormones so the body needs plenty of it to function to the best of it’s ability. If we look even closer at protein, we see it is made up of molecules called Branch Chain Amino Acids, or BCAA’s and these are what make up things like collagen, elastin and keratin, the structural substances that make up healthy hair, skin and nails. When we exercise, muscle fibers are stressed and broken down, then the protein we’ve consumed rushes in to repair the damage and strengthen the muscle. This very same process is the method by which protein, with it’s many BCAA’s, helps maintain our hair, skin and nails, as well as build them to be stronger and healthier. While we don’t exercise these body parts as we do our muscles, things like stress, environmental factors, aging and changing hormones can cause damage to these organs.
Since our hair, skin and nails are all made up of protein, consuming a sufficient amount is so important! Believe it or not, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body since it is involved in building and supporting bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Healthline says: “You can think of it as the “glue” that holds all these things together. In fact, the word comes from the Greek word “kólla,” which means glue.” (Healthline, 2020) Collagen plays many roles, such as:
Other key components include Elastin and Keratin. Elastin works together with collagen to keep the skin smooth and tight while keratin keeps it looking plump. Keratin also helps to regulate hair strength, volume and moisture, as well as prevent graying. And it’s even the main source of our nails’ strength.
Now that we know just how important protein really is, it’s time to add some more to the diet. Whether you are a meat-eater or tend to lean towards a plant-based diet, there are great food choices that are loaded with protein. Chicken, beef, fish, eggs and dairy are all fantastic sources of protein and healthy fats. If you are watching your carb intake, these are a win-win. Some great plant sources of protein include soy, amaranth, quinoa, chia seeds and hemp seeds. All of these options are considered “complete protein” sources because they include all of the amino acids your body needs. There are some foods that contain protein but only some of the essential amino acids. In this case, strategically combining two sources of plant based protein can get you the full package. A couple great food combos are:
Focusing on following a healthy diet is one of the most tried and true way to maintain our health. However, some people may find this challenging due to food sensitivities, auto-immune disorders or other complication. In these cases, diligently supplementing certain nutrients can be the best route to get all the nutrients you need. Nourage’s Hair + Wellness combines a balancing blend of powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, adaptogens and clinically-proven Keratin to nourish your hair and body from the inside out, resulting in fuller, healthier hair, stronger nails, glowing skin and renewed wellness.

]]>First things first, you want to get all the cleaning out of the way. You definitely don't want to worry about cleaning up while you're in the middle of pampering yourself! Make sure everything is prepped and ready to use. This will help make your spa day much more fluid and relaxing.
Tip: You may want to squirt some bath soap and start filling up your bathtub as soon as it’s clean. This step takes the longest.
Before you start your spa sesh, silence your cell phone. Take a break from social media and put all focus on yourself. If you want to go all out, you can put your phone on airplane mode to mute all distractions, however, keeping it aside on silent works too. Living in a time where we are so glued to the internet, it’s important to step back and enjoy quality time with yourself. This will give you a chance to detox your mind and give it a digital reset.
After you have rinsed off, and are probably already pruney, it's time to moisturize from head to toe. “According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), you should be using an ointment or cream, rather than a lotion, to get the most hydration benefits after bathing. If you have dry skin, the differences between lotions, ointments, and creams are particularly crucial.”
Read more on how to find perfect moisturizer for your skin here.
If you've opted out of gels and manicures right now, there's no better time to focus on strengthening your nails. Acrylics, gel manicures, washing dishes, changing seasons, and dry weather are all things that leave your nails weak and brittle if not properly taken care of. Adding oils like jojoba and lavender to your cuticles can encourage nail growth and strength.

]]>Practicing good hygiene to help boost your immune system is definitely no surprise. It’s the first line of defense is to keep germs away. Not only can you stop infection before it begins, but you can avoid spreading it to others by following these simple habits:
You know that staying “you are what you eat”? Well, it’s true. Your daily diet contributes to your overall health more that some realize. Incorporating nutritious foods full will provide your body with the necessary vitamins it needs to function properly and fend off common ailments like the flu or a cold.
Most people turn to OJ when they start feeling under the weather because it’s rich in vitamin C, but any citrus fruit will do the trick. Fruits like grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, and limes are all high in vitamin C and will help increase the production of white blood cells which helps fight infectious diseases.
When talking about veggies, if it’s green, it's extremely good for you. That’s because leafy greens are high in vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients, as well as both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. These are all health-promoting compounds that release chemical signals to strengthen your gut immunity, where 70-80% of immune cells are. Greens like kale, spinach, broccoli, and arugula are all great superfoods to add into your daily meals.
Ever wonder why people take ginger shots? For starters, ginger is a natural antibiotic, which means it has the ability to fight off many different types of bacteria. Not only does it support your immune system, but it also helps with nausea and stomach aches. If a ginger shot doesn’t sound too appealing, try drinking ginger tea!
You are also what you drink. Okay, this is not an actual saying, but it’s true! In fact, about 60% of your body is made up of water. It flushes all the toxins out of your system and is essential for your bodily functions. Although it’s not always easy, it's important to drink eight 8-ounce glasses, or 2 liters, of water a day.
Drinking plenty of electrolytes is also great for your immune system. Electrolytes are minerals like magnesium, sodium and potassium that balance your bodily fluids. They are also responsible for regulating blood pressure and muscle contraction. If you work out at all, electrolytes are very beneficial as it helps ease muscle pain. You can get your electrolytes from coconut water, watermelon water, pedialyte, or sports drinks, however, be aware of added sugar. You want to opt for drinks with little to no sugar.
Getting in all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs on a daily basis can be difficult, not to mention, every person's body is unique and needs different amounts. That’s why supplementation is important. Vitamins C, B6, E, and D, zinc, iron, selenium, and folate are all immune boosting vitamins and minerals that can be taken together or separate. Nouráge is an optimal supplement that contain vitamins B and C, and zinc supporting your body while simultaneously nourishing your hair.
Getting a proper amount of sleep affects your health more than you may think. According to a new study, when you don't get enough sleep, "you block specific genetic processes in the cells that make up your immune system, which is responsible for fighting off infections and disease." It's recommended that you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night to keep your mind and body healthy.

Keeping your hands and cuticles moisturized is essential for maintaining healthy nails. It’s helpful to keep hand lotion readily available and apply it after washing your hands. It’s especially critical to apply lotion or cuticle oil after using drying products like acetone or hand sanitizer that contains alcohol. These products cause brittleness and breakage, but moisturizing afterwards and on a consistent basis can repair damage and nourish your nails.
A perfect manicure looks great on the outside, but it can cause damage to the nail underneath. Nail polish can weaken your nails by not allowing them to breath, so taking a break for even a week can be beneficial. Avoiding acrylic nails is best because the process removes layers from your nails, weakening them in the process. When you do want polished nails, make sure to apply a base coat, which can help strengthen the underlying nail.
Along the same lines, staying hydrated is important for hair, skin, and nail health. Drinking enough water ensures that your nails get the moisture they need to stay healthy through daily activities. Dehydration, on the other hand, causes dryness and breakage, especially when coupled with drying products or frequent manicures.
While drinking water is essential for nail health, too much exposure to water can weaken your nails. We’re not talking about washing your hands here––we’re talking about excessive soaking in a bath, pool, or while washing dishes. It can help, for example, to wash dishes while wearing gloves to minimize unnecessary soaking.
Taking a daily supplement with biotin and keratin is a great way to boost your nail strength. These two important vitamins are essential for hair and nail growth, and are effective at repairing damage and maintaining healthy nails. Our Nourage formula includes biotin, keratin, and other essential nutrients to boost your nail strength and health.

]]>Old age isn’t always the reason why gray hair start coming in. Gray hair is actually different than pigmented hair. Your hair follicles generate color through pigment cells that make melanin, a dark biological pigment found in skin, hair, and eyes. As you age, these cells start to die, but they can die out sooner than others depending on a several factors. You have to factor in health, genetics, and medical conditions but many of these situations can be prevent. Gray hair can be a big wake up call for some but luckily there are way to postpone the process.
Gray hair typically comes down to your genetics. If your parents started going gray at the age of 30, chances are you will too. People tend to start going gray between the ages of 45 and 65 depending on age and ethnicity, but in this case it’s completely natural for it to start appearing sooner than others. Premature graying can start as early as 20 years old according to a study. When you start seeing those gray strands pop up you may want to look into your family member timelines to see if you match up with them. If you are experiencing grey hair sooner than your family members genetics may not be the case.
When it comes to genetics, you can’t prevent premature gray hair. Instead, embrace your natural hair and keep it nourished.
Oxidative stress can lead to premature gray hair as it causes imbalances in your body. “A recent study on young adults in Turkey revealed that premature grey hair is closely related to factors causing oxidative stress such as emotional stress, alcohol consumption, and chronic diseases in genetically predisposed men and women.” Such imbalances affect your molecules and react in a way that directly damages your lipids, proteins, and DNA. Since these are used to power our cells and build our bodies, damaging them through stress can ultimately change the pigmentation of your hair.
It may not be easy but you can prevent stress if you focus on way to relieve it. You may want to try meditating, reading a book, getting a massage, exercising, or trying any other natural remedies. When looking for ways to relieve stress, make sure they do not include drinking or smoking, as those are only temporary fixes that are also causes of gray hair.
All vitamin B’s, D and E are important for healthy hair, however, vitamin B12 is the most important of them all. Vitamin B12 deficiency is the most common cause of premature grey hair. This powerful vitamin helps produce red blood cells and DNA, while helping your nervous system function. These play a very important part in your hair color and can affect people of all ages.
You can’t actually prevent or delay greying due to the production of melanin, but you can reverse it by intaking more Vitamin B12. Nouráge is high in both ingredients making it the perfect remedy to prevent or reverse those gray hairs.
There are a few different types of autoimmune diseases that can increase your chances of premature gray hair like alopecia areata, AI thyroid diseases and vitiligo. Autoimmune disease affects 23.5 million Americans, and nearly 80 percent of those are women. Vitiligo is actually a skin condition where patches of your skin lose pigment, however, it affects your hair color as well. Alopecia on the other hand is a disease that results in hair loss and if hair grows back, it tends to grow back white due to melanin deficiency. According to researchers at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Alabama “there is a clear connection between the genes that contribute to hair color and the genes that control the body's immune system.”
The best way to prevent autoimmune disease is by consistently taking care of your body through exercise, eating healthy and supplements. You want to make sure to nourish your body with enough essential vitamins and nutrients. It’s also important to avoid environmental toxins and anything else that may be detrimental to you health.
You may have heard people say “smoking ages you”. Well, it’s very much true. Studies have shown that smokers are 2 1/2 times more likely to start graying before age 30 compared to non-smokers.
The obvious way to prevent gray hair in this case is to not smoke tobacco. If this is difficult for you, there are many ways to manage your cigarette cravings, like exercise, chew gum, and keep your mind busy with healthy habits.

]]>Everyday your skin is exposed to dirt, oil, and other unwanted debris that can lead to serious skin problems if not properly taken care of. Your epidermis (the outermost layer of your skin) is protective layer that fights against the environment and it's important to keep it strong and healthy. This is why it's crucial to build a skincare routine that works well with you specific skin type.
We all have different skin types and our own little quirks, so your skincare routine is something personal, however, there are 3 steps that are crucial to maintaining a healthy and clear complexion: Cleansing, Toning, then Moisturizing (and it should always be done in this order).
This is the most crucial step –– washing your face. As we mentioned, every day your face collects dirt, bacteria, viruses, unwanted debris, and dead skin cells which can build up if not washed off. This can lead to clogged pores, serious acne, and can even make it difficult for other products to penetrate.
It’s also important you are using the right face wash for your skin type. You want to keep your skin’s pH levels balanced which enables sufficient water and product retention. Skin can be considered unbalanced if its pH levels are either too alkaline or too acidic. For an example, if you have dry and sensitive skin, it’s likely to be too alkaline so you want to stay away from bar saps and foamy cleansers. If you have oily skin and are prone to break outs, chances are your skin’s pH balance is too acidic. This means you want to stay away from over-exfoliating and face peels. Repeatedly disturbing the skin’s pH to a strong degree can lead to or worsen many problems, including common skin disorders.
Consider this chart when looking for the right cleanser for your skin type (according to skincare enthusiast Kari Molvar):
Toner isn’t exactly a necessary, but if you have oily skin or plugged pores this can be life changing. Unfortunately, cleanser doesn’t always fully clean your face so this is where toner comes into play. It helps remove any excess dirt, oil, make-up and dead skin cells that is lurking on your skin. This thin liquid contains nutrients that help the other products in your regimen absorb better, while still balancing your complexion.
When searching for the right toner for your skin type this is what you should look out for:
Acne-Prone Skin: Salicylic Acid
Salicylic Acid gently exfoliates and removes dead skin, while also increasing cell turnover and collagen production.
Dry Skin: Glycerin or Essential Oils
Glycerin has emollient-like properties that will soften the skin and essential oils also work great for dry skin as they nourish and smooth. However, if your skin is hypersensitive, essential oils can create contact dermatitis. Make sure to stay away from toners with alcohol in them, as it makes your skin even more dry.
Mature Skin: Aloe Vera or Vitamin C
Aloe soothes and moisturizes without breaking you out and vitamin C is rich in antioxidants, which target free radicals and protect the skin to help fight against aging.
Normal Skin: Coenzyme Q10 or Hyaluronic Acid
Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant and Hyaluronic Acid will replenish moisture, giving your skin a hydrated, softer look and feel.
Oily Skin: Bentonite Clay or Witch Hazel
Bentonite clay helps control shine and purify the skin, which is crucial for congested pores, while witch hazel is an ideal active ingredient for oily skin as it’s a natural astringent and can tighten your skin.
Sensitive Skin: Algae or Amino Acids
Algae has soothing qualities and contains amino acids, which work to detoxify and remove impurities that can irritate the skin.
Moisturizing is vital for healthy skin as it helps keep it soft and hydrated. As you get older it becomes harder for your skin to retain its natural glow and moisture, even more so if you have dry skin. Simple things like washing your face can strip your natural oils which is why it’s important to moisturize. “Everyone needs moisture, but the texture of your moisturizer will differ depending on your skin type” says Dr. Rachel Nazarian, a Manhattan dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group. There are four different moisturizers to consider: gel, lotion, cream and balm.
Oily Skin: Gel Moisturizer
This is is a water-based moisturizer that's lightweight and absorbs quickly so it doesn't leave your skin greasy and keeps your skin feeling clean and hydrated.
Normal/ Combination Skin: Lotion
The classic moisturizer and most people's go-to. Although still mostly water based, it has a creamier consistency and is more moisturizing than gel.
Dry Skin: Cream
Cream is a more oil based giving your skin the extra moisture it needs to stay hydrated. It also helps you achieve a more even skin tone.
Inflamed/ Sensitive Skin: Balm
Most balms are beeswaxed based which helps with inflammation and is considered wound-healing agent. It's also known to seal moisture and protect your skin from the environment.
Consistency is everything. If you are looking to improve your skin, do not expect to just that following your regimen for few days will automatically change your skins. Results are only seen through consistent use and a healthy diet. If you find yourself struggling to get all the nutrients you need through diet, you may want to consider taking supplements like Nouráge. Our supplements not only transform your hair but your skin as well. Full of skin-boosting nutrients, our formula fortifies the crucial outside layer of the skin while maintaining the dermal-epidermal junction– the key to creating a healthy complexion.

Medical conditions that cause hair loss include alopecia areata, which causes sudden hair loss in patches, scalp infections like ringworm, and iron-deficiency anemia. However, the most common cause is hereditary: male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness. These conditions occur with aging and result in receding hairlines in men and hair thinning in women. In addition, some diseases that cause scarring, like lupus, can result in permanent hair loss. Depending on the medical condition, doctors will prescribe medication to treat the hair loss, so it’s essential to consult your doctor if you’re experiencing unusual hair loss.
Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid problems can result in hair loss. This form of hair loss is generally temporary, and the hair typically regrows when the hormones are normalized.
Hair loss is a side effect of some medications, like those used to treat arthritis, cancer, depression, and heart problems. Depending on the drug, the hair may regrow completely on its own after discontinuing use. For example, while hair usually regrows within 6 months to a year after chemotherapy, hair may never regrow completely after radiation therapy to the head.
Physical and emotional stress can cause hair loss. For example, some people experience hair thinning a few months after a death in the family or another emotional shock. Extreme weight loss or a high fever can also cause noticeable hair loss. This is because high stress levels can cause the hair follicles to lie dormant. Overall, maintaining low stress levels is better for your health and will help restore hair growth after a period of high stress.
Hair loss can also be the result of a poor diet. If you’re not getting enough protein, iron, or other nutrients, you may experience thinning hair. In this case, adding these core nutrients back into your diet will restore hair growth. To learn more about the foods that promote strong and healthy hair, check out 5 Foods for Healthy Hair.
Hair loss is a common problem that many people face with age. If you’re worried about your hair thinning, or just wish to have stronger, thicker hair, it’s important to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients your hair needs. That’s why our Nourage formula ensures that you get the right blend of protein, vitamins, and antioxidants to support fuller, healthier hair.

We love learning about different people's hair journeys and it's even more special to us when we are a part of it. So, in honor of #GetToKnowYourCustomerDay we got to know our lovely customer, Aimee, as she gave a glimpse of her hair care routine, tips and more!
"Before Nourage, I was always in search of any way to give my hair volume."
What hairstyle makes you feel most confident?
I’m most confident when my hair is styled half up half down with big, loose curls. I feel like I can take on the world!
What is your go-to hairstyle?
I typically blow dry it straight if I’ve just hopped out of the shower. But if I haven’t washed my hair in a couple of days, I use dry shampoo and do “quick” curls to give it volume.
What’s your favorite hair accessory?
Definitely clips! I’ve got quite the collection. It’s a huge trend right now so I have a bunch of different colors and styles.
What’s your daily beauty routine?
I’m always on the go and not much of a morning person, so my routine is pretty simple and quick. One thing I always make sure to do is to wash my face. Not only does it wake me up, but I have to wash all that dirt and oil that builds up overnight. After that, I add a little moisturizer and start my makeup, which is pretty simple – I always go the natural look. This probably takes me 30 minutes max. What takes forever is deciding what I’m going to wear. Hah! Nourage is also, part of my daily routine which I take after breakfast. I always make sure to have a little something in my stomach before taking any kind of supplement.
Best hair or beauty advice that will always stick with you?
I actually have two hair tips:
1. If you're always on the go, like me, use a hair mask when you work out. It allows the hair mask to sit for a long time while staying busy. I put the hair mask on from ends to roots, tie my hair up in a bun, add a sweatband, go on a run or do a workout, and then hop straight into the shower to wash it out. I do this about every 2 weeks to keep my hair moisturized, soft, and shiny.
2. Instead of brushing your hair as you would normally do after using dry shampoo, use a hairdryer to blast your roots. This will give your hair extra body and volume.
How long have you been taking Nourage
I’ve been a Nourage gal for 5 months now!
What were your hair concerns before taking Nourage?
My main concern was hair fallout – I used to shed like crazy! I have naturally straight hair, and my hair strands are pretty thin, so that combo leaves me with flat hair (unless I curl it). Before Nourage, I was always in search of any way to give my hair volume.
Describe what Nouarge has done for you.
Nourage has blown me away with noticeably fuller hair! In the first couple of months, I started noticing my nails grow stronger, which is great since I get my nails done often. But then I really started noticing a difference in my hair 3-months into taking it. It was definitely a confidence booster so you already know Nourage will be apart of my beauty routine for 2020!
How else do you keep your hair healthy (oils, foods, salon)?
I make sure to get my hair trimmed regularly ( every 3 or 4 months) and lots and lots of macadamia oil! I know there are a lot of other oils that probably work great too, but I prefer macadamia oil – it smells amazing and keeps my hair extra silky smooth.
]]>There are many common mistakes people make that can stop your hair from growing as long and luscious as you'd like, some things you may not have realized are damaging to your hair. Here are seven surprising things that are bad for your hair:
Washing Your Hair In Hot Water
No, we’re not saying you should take a cold shower, but any kind of heat is not good for your hair. Washing your hair with hot water can strip your natural oils leaving your hair dry, frizzy and more prone to falling out. It’s best to wash your hair with lukewarm water, then rinse with it with cold water. Trust us, that quick cold rinse will do wonders.
After you hop out of the shower, let your hair air-dry. Do not blow dry it. Add a drop of hair oil or leave-in conditioner and be ready for shiny, silky smooth hair.
Over Washing Your Hair
Sorry to all you fitness lovers… you may want to cut down on washing your hair 5-6 times a week. Shampooing your hair too often can strip your natural moisture and dry out your scalp. So if you sweat often, strive to wash every 2 days, otherwise, 2-3 times a week is recommended.
It’s also important you are choosing the right shampoo for your hair type and texture. This will help give your hair the proper moisture it needs to look it’s very best.
Roughly Drying Your Hair
Your hair is most weak and vulnerable when it’s wet, so make sure to be gentle with it when drying it. Try not to roughly rub your hair with the towel, the friction can cause frizz and breakage. Instead, lightly pat dry it, or if you like to wrap your hair in a towel, don’t twist it too tight.
Blow drying is obviously bad for your hair, but an occasional blow-dry isn’t too damaging if you do it right. Once you hop out of the shower, lightly dry your hair with a towel, air dry for 15- 20 minutes, then use a blow dryer in a continuous motion at least 15 cm any from your hair.
Brushing Your Hair From the Root
There is a proper technique for brushing your hair. I know this sounds a little weird. You’re probably asking yourself, “is it really necessary to brush your hair a certain way?” Well, if you want healthy, voluminous hair, then yes. The best way to minimize breakage and excess fall out is to start brushing from your ends and work your way to the roots.
Tight Hair Styles
Bad hair day? A quick ponytail will do the trick. Off to the gym? *Puts hair up in a tight bun. These hairstyles are totally okay if you're not doing it all the time. The real question is, what kind of hair ties are you using? Putting your hair back with a tight thin hair tie can pull your hair from the scalp, damaging your roots. Instead, opt for bobby pins, clips or scrunchies.
Stressing
It’s medically proven that any kind of physical or psychological stress is detrimental to hair growth. Your hair reacts to stress similarly to how your skin would. Rather than a pimple, excessive stress can lead to telogen effluvium, a mild scalp disorder that results in hair thinning and/or shedding. The hair stops growing for about 2 or 3 months, falls out, then grows back within 6 to 9 months.
Bad Diet
Food affects your hair just as much as it does your skin. Just like your body, your hair requires adequate vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to grow healthy. Your diet should consist of foods that are rich in protein, iron, and vitamin E, zinc and copper. It’s not always easy eating the right foods that supply your body with the proper amount of vitamins so supplements. up with all the nutrients your body needs. why supplements like Nouráge, make it easier for you to obtain the nutrients your for the healthiest hair, skin, and nails.

]]>First things first, you’ve got to figure out where you’d like to spend your vacation, which all depends on your individual circumstances. You must ask yourself:
-How much time do I have?
-What is my budget?
-Do I want to fly somewhere or go on a road trip?
-Do I want a tropical getaway or winter wonderland?
Once you’ve answered these questions, we recommend you choose your top 3 locations and start doing some research. It's always nice to give yourself some options.
Peak season usually means good weather, which is ideal for any vacation, but it all depends on what you want to do on your holiday (hiking, relaxing, shopping, etc). If you decide to spend your vacation during peak season, it typically means places will be overcrowded with other tourists and prices for activities/ stay are much higher. However, not all destinations are suitable for off-season travel (could you imagine Machu Picchu during rainy season? No thanks). So if you don't want to chance bad weather, have a flexible budget and don't mind crowds, this is the time for you.
This is good for those who are on a budget and absolutely cannot do crowds. Travel prices are typically lower and the best spots aren't overcrowded with tourists. Although this time of the season is known for unfortunate weather, some destinations have better weather than others. For example, if you are thinking of visiting South East Asia, the rain tends to fall heavy only for just a few hours at a predictable time each day (usually in the mornings and late night) leaving the rest of the day bright and beautiful with the most spectacular sunsets!
Being in a beautiful place overcrowded with people often takes away from the experience, which is nice that shoulder season is a good balance of everything. If you can, this is a great time to go. The weather is almost at it’s best, prices are quite low, and you won’t be around too many tourists.
Now we get to the fun part, planning what do you actually want to do on your vacation. Start by making a list of all the possible activities you want to do so you have options, then research the best things to do at each destination – but don’t just search on google, go on youtube, find spots on Instagram, and ask for recommendations. As you do your research, it's helpful to note the rough cost of each activity and possible transportation details. This is will make your life much easier, especially if you’re on a budget.
If you are traveling outside of the United States and don’t want to spend a lot of money, hostels are the way to go. They are typically located in prime locations and the best for those looking to socialize, party, and are willing to sleep in a bunk bed (ideal for those traveling alone). Hostels aren't for everyone though. The downside is you don’t have much privacy, beds aren't always the comfiest and you may not always get a hot shower.
If you are traveling with a big group of people, staying in a villa allows you to have a whole place to yourself! The perks of this it's much more private and you’ll definitely have no issues with hot water. Airbnb is a great site to find unique homes. If you are really trying to ball out, and don't plan to do much exploring, hotels and resorts may be the way to go.
If you're on a tight schedule, you are definitely going to want to type up an itinerary. It can be as simple as writing out what you plan to do or where you plan to go. You can even go in more detail and write out your activities, it's pricing, hours, as well as useful tips. Writing out the useful tips you learn as you do research because its hard to remember everything. You can add notes on how to say basic phrases, how much you should expect to pay for things, recommendations, etc. Whether you’re going with the flow or on a tight schedule, you should have at least a rough outline or plan. Trust me, this will help make your trip go much smoother.

Water consumption plays a huge role in conserving our planet. Reducing water consumption decreases the amount of water we take away from our lakes and rivers, which helps keep our environment clean and healthy. There are so many ways to conserve water at home, like taking shorter showers and remembering to turn the faucet off when it’s not in use. Water can also be repurposed, for example, by using the same water you use to rinse your vegetables to water the plants. Speaking of watering the plants, try shifting away from using hoses and sprinklers and take care of your plants manually to save water. If you have a pool, make sure to keep it covered to reduce evaporation (and save money and energy on heating!).
Sustainable shopping includes both how you shop and what products you buy. It’s so easy to reduce plastic waste by bringing along a reusable shopping bag and reusable containers for things like nuts and prepared foods. It’s also important to choose sustainable products that reduce our environmental footprint. By supporting brands that aim to protect our planet, you can encourage other companies to be more conscious of their sourcing and production methods. Some of our favorite eco-friendly brands include Summersalt for sustainable swimwear and AllBirds for shoes made from recycled materials.
Choosing to bike or walk instead of driving is one of the most effective ways to reduce your environmental footprint. According to National Geographic, auto emissions account for around one-third of the pollution in the US. In addition to releasing toxins into the air, travelling by car has other costs, including the environmental damage of extracting fuel from the earth and the energy consumed from shipping fuel. Cars are a convenient and reliable way to travel, but when you can, it’s always better to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
You can show your support for sustainable food production practices by shifting towards a plant-based diet. Choosing to substitute meat for plant-based options can reduce your environmental footprint by reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to biodiversity loss. Producing meat requires vast amounts of agricultural land and lots of water, and leaves us with toxic chemicals in our air and waterways. You don’t need to make the jump to a strict vegan diet; simply choosing plant-based options every now and then can make a real impact. For some inspiration, invite your friends over to try these Vegan Barbecue Brussels Sprout Tacos next Meatless Monday!
Your voice is a powerful tool that can be used for positive change. Using your voice on social media is a great way to show brands that you care about protecting our environment and demand sustainable practices. It’s also important to have conversations with your friends and those around you about sustainable living so that everyone is informed and equipped to make the best choices concerning our planet.

When you think of “clean” beauty, what comes to your mind? Maybe it’s organic or natural, vegan or free of chemicals. There is really no set definition. Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not clearly defined "clean", the term clean beauty is really open to interpretation. That’s why we decided to do our research to determine what exactly we should be looking out for in our beauty products.
It's always overwhelming strolling down the beauty aisle. There are so many different labels that claim to be natural, organic or vegan, it can get very confusing. Buying the right products can be a big decision. I mean, we want to make sure we are putting safe products on our skin! So let's break down the difference between these labels.
Organic products are made without pesticides, herbicides, synthetic chemicals, and synthetic fertilizers. You’ll know it’s truly organic if it’s USDA certified – products that are labeled “natural” have no regulations. Any company can call their product “natural” and define that term however they want. Unfortunately, it is usually used as a marketing strategy because companies know shoppers will respond to it. Many consumers think natural is better because frankly, it sounds safer. In reality, any brand can claim their product to be natural while still containing toxic chemicals.
Vegan products don’t contain any ingredients derived from animals – including honey, collagen, albumen, carmine, cholesterol, and gelatin. But is it safer? Not necessarily. Vegan doesn’t mean it’s clean, they can still contain harmful chemicals.
Products that are labeled “chemical-free” is also a marketing trick. Think about it... everything is a chemical! The water you drink (H2O), the food you eat (starch), and the air you breathe (oxygen). It’s the type of chemicals that's important to be aware of – ones that are harmful to the skin.
According to a 2004 study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), one of every five adults are potentially exposed every day to carcinogenic impurities in their personal care product. These are cancer-causing chemicals that are legal. It's astonishing, but sadly, the FDA has little power over the ingredients that go into our beauty products. This leaves it up to the consumers to do their research and read their labels. So here is a few ingredients you should look out for:
The most common carcinogen – a colorless, strong-smelling chemical used in building materials, many household products, and yup, your everyday beauty products. This is preservative that can irritate the skin and is capable of causing cancer in living tissue. According to the EWG,12.2 million adults are exposed to carcinogens found in personal care products. This chemical is typically found in color cosmetics, nail products, hair gel, hair-smoothing products, and eyelash glue.
Alternative names to look out for: 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol), diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, quaternium-15.
A man-made preservative that mimics anti-microbial agents in plants. This chemical is used in products to prevent mold, bacteria growth and stimulate hair growth, however, it comes with unwanted side effects if used too often. Not only is it a hormone-disruptor but parabens have been linked to skin conditions like dermatitis and rosacea.
Alternative names to look out for: propylparaben, isopropyl paraben, butylparaben, and isobutyl paraben
The chemical that lathers your skin leaving it silky smooth can actually be quite damaging. More so when it’s mixed with nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA), another substance widely used in beauty products. When they are paired together, it absorbs through the skin leading to stomach, esophagus, liver and bladder cancer. These chemicals have already been restricted in cosmetics by the European Commission due to concerns about the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines, but is still widely used in products in the U.S.
Alternative names to look out for: Cocamide Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine, Oleamide Diethanolamine, Linoleamide Diethanolamine, and Diethanolamine Lauryl Sulfate.
An ingredient you should think twice about before putting on, especially if you have sensitive skin. The FDA has little control so companies are not required to disclose ingredients that are considered trade secrets. Fragrance is one of them – which itself contains other ingredients. This means companies do not have to label the toxic ingredients as long as they are considered part of the “fragrance formula”. What's not typically labeled is scent, color, and experiential elements like how the fragrance sticks to your skin. If you are experiencing skin irritation or dryness after using a product, there’s a chance it’s coming from a synthetic fragrance. Other effects include allergic reactions, cancer or reproductive toxicity with long-term exposure.
Alternative names to look out for: perfume, parfum, essential oil blend, aroma, and flavor
ConclusionWhen looking for beauty products, we often look for products that are effective with fast results. Regardless if you're looking for a vegan, hypoallergenic, or an organic product, quality is a very important function of its ingredients. From make-up to lotion to face wash, it’s common for these products to carry chemicals that can be damaging to your skin, which ultimately is what you want to avoid when looking for beauty products. If you’re having skin issues, Nouráge contains natural ingredients that fortify the outside layer of your skin while maintaining the dermal-epidermal junction — the key to creating a healthy complexion. We suggest you minimize the number of toxic chemicals you apply to your skin and take your vitamins to keep your skin nice and healthy.

]]>Crystals go way back to the beginning of man time among different cultures all over the world. The Ancient Egyptians used stones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, carnelian, emerald and clear quartz in their jewelry primarily for protection and health. The Ancient Greeks, on the other hand, used crystals in a different way. They were known for rubbing hematite all over their bodies before battle, an iron ore associated with the god of war, which purportedly made themselves invulnerable. Ancient China, South America, and New Zealand were known to praise jade, yet, each culture used it in a different way. These are just a few examples of cultures using crystals for salvation in various ways. Over time these traditions were passed on from generation to generation and evolved into what is now practiced as an alternative therapy.
For some people, crystals are just a piece of jewelry with no significant meaning but for others, it’s a way of life. In this day and age, crystals are used for self-help and are most powerful during meditation. It is believed that crystals channel certain energies and vibrations in your mind and body that can ultimately heal you mentally, physically and emotionally.
Every crystal is assigned to different properties, however, there are crystals you may just gravitate towards for your own reasons, it all depends on the eye of the beholder. The properties in each crystal are meant to take out any negative or out of balance vibrations correlating to different energy centers. In mediation, healing crystals serve as a tool to help connect our conscious, as well as our subconscious thoughts, and feelings with our body’s energy– or chakra. You can think of it as a way to enhance your meditation. When people say they feel the power in the crystal, they are feeling their own body's electric field, or some people refer to it as their ora.
The use of crystals goes beyond meditation. Some people wear them in a necklace for protection, some place them around the house to radiate positive energy, and others keep it in their pocket for luck. It’s truly up to you on how you use it and there’s no right or wrong way to use them. It's a personal thing you work out for yourself.
Not everyone is as sensitive to the sensations crystals supposedly give off during meditation. According to Dr. Christopher French, a psychologist at Goldsmith's College, it comes down to your beliefs of the spiritual world. Dr. French conducted a study that showed people with paranormal beliefs were more inclined to feel tingles and sensations when meditating with crystals. He also argued that crystals themselves are not “magical”, it's all in the power of suggestion. In this study, 80 people were selected to meditate for five minutes while holding a quartz crystal. Half of the people were given genuine quartz, while the other half were given a fake quartz. Only six out of the 80 did not experience at least some kind of sensation. Dr. French concluded, "the fact that the same effects were found with both genuine and fake crystals undermines any claims that crystals have mysterious powers which they are claimed to have.”
The power of crystals may not be scientifically proven, but the mind is a powerful thing. Perhaps it’s the placebo effect that makes people think crystals radiate certain feelings. Either way, there’s no doubt that crystals make many people feel at peace in some way. If you are looking for ways to connect with your mind and body, crystal healing might be for you, but there’s definitely no need to break the bank.

]]>Like any other bad habit, sugar comes with some side effects. Once you give into a bad habit, you raise the dopamine levels in your brain, satisfying that urge. Sugar does the same –– it gives you short-term happiness. When it fades, your, body craves that quick fix. If you stop feeding into your sugar cravings, it can result in symptoms like fatigue, depression, headaches, and muscle aches. No wonder it’s so hard to quit consuming sugar! Your brain only has so much willpower, especially when it tastes so good.
Well first, you may want to try listening to your cravings and find the root of the cause. Your craving for sugar could be for a few different reasons: your diet, sleep, mental health, and habits. Now let’s take a look at how these impact your cravings.
Your body needs the right amount of fiber, protein, and healthy fats. Not eating enough of them can trigger your desire for sugary foods. Proteins and fats slow down the release of sugar into your bloodstream, so if your body does not have enough, your blood sugar fluctuates at an abnormal rate. At that point your start craving sugar for quick energy. A similar thing happens when you eat too many carbs, as well as not enough. Simple carbs enter your bloodstream much quicker leaving you unsatisfied and more inclined to crave sugary foods.
Lack of sleep can make you crave sugar. People are more likely to crave foods high in sugar and calories after 8:00 pm. And the less sleep you get, the more likely your cravings will continue on to the next day. A study showed that those who were deprived of sleep craved junk food of 600+ calories more than those who got good quality sleep. According to Stephanie Greer, a doctoral student in Walker’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory, “the brain becomes impaired by sleep deprivation, leading to the selection of more unhealthy foods and, ultimately, higher rates of obesity.”
We tend to eat our favorite sugary food when we are feeling stressed, depressed or anxious as a survival mechanism. When you consume sugar, your serotonin levels boost –– a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, memory, and social behavior –– providing temporary happiness. This then fuels your cravings making you continuously needing that quick fix. Researchers found that those going through depression had higher levels of sugar than those who weren’t. In negative mental states, relying on your sugary guilty pleasures to make you happy is often the easiest route.
Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason, it’s simply just a bad habit. You may just love sweets. Or you can’t hold back on overeating your grandma’s famous cookies. Or Cap'n Crunch cereal brings back childhood memories.
After you’ve found the root cause of your cravings, you can make an effort to make some lifestyle changes. You can start trying to curve your cravings by outsmarting your habits. Here are some ways to minimize those sugar cravings:
Eat a wholesome, high protein breakfast.
Use healthier sweeteners like stevia, honey, and agave.
Eat more fruit.
Incorporate veggies like sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, and pumpkin into your diet.
Drink plenty of water. Add lemon or berries to make it more flavorful.
Plan your meals ahead of time. You’re less likely to settle or turn to for sugary foods when you meal prep.
Incorporate more proteins and healthy fats into your diet. Nuts and hard-boiled eggs great snacks that are high in protein and healthy fat.
Exercise. This will naturally boost your serotonin levels.
If you’re having a hard time sleeping, try melatonin –– a natural pill to help you sleep better.
Ultimately, everyone has cravings. We’re not recommending you take sugar out of your diet completely, but to consume as little as possible. Unless sugar is a health issue for you, it's okay to consume it in moderation. Luckily, more and more food brands are going the “healthy” route nowadays. You can find many delicious sugar-free foods at your local grocery store. Stores like WholeFoods and Sprouts are commonly known to have a wider variety of healthy options. So when you crave something sugary and unhealthy, try an apple or sugar-free cookie instead.

]]>Without a doubt, the weather plays a big factor in your fall wardrobe. The start of the season can be a little unpredictable, so it’s always good to be prepared for whatever temperature comes your way. If you plan to be out past sunset, playing around with layers can save you from being too cold or too hot throughout the day. One of our favorite transitional looks this season allows us to keep all our summer maxi dresses in the closet. Layer it with a tee shirt or turtleneck and throw on a cozy jacket and VOILÀ! You’ve turned a summer dress into your (now) favorite fall dress.
How you accessorize your outfit can make any outfit stand out. Fall 2019 is all about bucket hats, cozy scarves, visible socks, colorful tights, fitted gloves– all things that keep you extra warm. If you live in a warmer city, like Los Angeles, throw on a bucket hat with a dress (or really any summer outfit) and a coat. If you’re in a city where you’d be nuts to walk outside bare-legged, add some colorful tights and a cozy jacket to complete your look.
You know it’s fall when boots are the only shoes you want to wear. Instantly change your look from summer to fall by adding boots to your outfit. The top trending boots you will be seeing everywhere this season are tall slouchy boots, white boots, animal print booties, and combat boots. Oh yeah, combat boots are back and they’re going strong this fall!
Pantone Color Institute published the top 12 fall colors for the fashion industry and this year’s color palette is full of bold colors that stand strong alone and work well mixed and matched. When you think of "fall colors" you often think darker tones and autumn leaf colors (which is still valid), however, the runways were bold and colorful! So don't be afraid to incorporate some of your bright summer pieces into your outfits this season. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute said “Colors for Autumn/Winter 2019-2020 range from easy and sophisticated to strikingly different and unique”. Basically, have fun with your fall palette this year.
You know that cozy sweater you’ve been waiting all summer to wear (and snuggle up in)? Well, you’re going to love it even more. This fall is all about pairing your coziest sweater with your brightest and comfiest bottoms – whether it's high waisted shorts, palazzo pants or a maxi skirt. This combination is definitely worth trying. You get the best of both worlds – staying comfy while still looking chic.
Transitioning your closet from summer to fall can be tricky, but fashion truly has no rules. Take risks or play it safe, do whatever makes you feel most confident. At the end of the day, confidence is the best outfit. Wear it and rock it.

Intermittent fasting involves restricting your food intake to a certain window of time each day. There are a few different methods of intermittent fasting, including fasting for 24 hours once a week and consuming only 500-600 calories twice a week. The most popular, however, is the 16/8 method, which splits each day into a 16 hour fasting period and an 8 hour eating period, such as 12-8 p.m. The logic is the same for every method: by reducing the amount of time spent eating each day, you reduce overall calorie intake and lose weight. In addition, fasting causes changes in your hormone levels, which speeds up your metabolism and promotes weight loss even further.
Besides being a powerful weight-loss method, intermittent fasting has benefits over other diets. For one, many people are attracted to intermittent fasting because it’s more of an eating pattern than a restrictive diet. So, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods, given that it falls within your eating period. It also makes living a healthy lifestyle more simple because you don’t need to plan and cook certain foods or track what you’re putting into your body. For these reasons, many people find intermittent fasting easy to stick to, so you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and see results.
As with every diet, intermittent fasting is not for everyone. There are a few specific groups of people who should avoid fasting, including pregnant women, people with diabetes, and people with a history of eating disorders. If you’re in the clear, the major disadvantage of intermittent fasting is that it may make you feel much hungrier and less energetic, especially in the mornings. Skipping meals can also lower your blood sugar, which could cause nausea and headaches.
Note: Water, tea, and black coffee are allowed during the fasting period, which should help relieve hunger and fatigue, and means that you can still keep up with your daily dose of Nourage supplements!
Intermittent fasting can be a great weight-loss strategy for people who want to enjoy their favorite foods and don’t have the time to plan and cook healthy meals. Many people find that it makes sticking to a healthy lifestyle easier by simplifying their eating schedule to a strict window of time each day. While this diet is not for everyone, it can be an effective way to lose weight and commit to healthy living.

Over time, these deodorants build up chemical residue that can be detrimental to your skin and body. This is where the armpit detox comes in handy. It’s the perfect way to transition to natural deodorants as it cleanses all the toxins and buildup on your skin while canceling odor. It’s no surprise why armpit detox is such a hot topic in the world of health and beauty right now. You can either buy a pre-made detox or whip one up yourself with some ingredients you can find in your kitchen. According to Medical News Daily, the armpit detox consists of 3 simple ingredients:
Start by mixing all ingredients with a non-metal spoon until it has the consistency of yogurt. Make sure you wash your armpits and give them a good scrub before using the mask. Dry with a cloth. Then apply an even layer of the mask onto your armpits. Let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes– increase time-periods by a few minutes every time you repeat the remedy (no longer than 20 minutes). Use a cloth to wash off with warm water. Apply natural deodorant as normal.
Use the mask daily until your armpits are odor-free. To fully detox, this process may take as long as a week.
Note that this may leave your armpits a little red, however, it’s normal and harmless. If you feel any kind of reaction to the clay, wash it off immediately.
Armpits are the body’s exit points– where toxins escape your body via sweat. But nobody wants to sweat, nor do we want the odor that comes with it, which is why we use deodorant. From the day we start puberty, applying deodorant becomes a part of our daily routine. It makes us smell good, and if it has antiperspirant, we hardly sweat. However, many deodorants and antiperspirants contain potent chemicals to help fight your armpits from producing sweat and odor. It temporarily clogs our pores and after conditionally using for a long period of time, our skin is left with chemical residue. Some synthetic ingredients to watch out for are aluminum, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, antibacterial substances, and propylene glycol. These can all disrupt our body’s natural processes and can lead to more damage than just clogged armpit pores.
Aluminum and parabens are the most commonly used chemicals in antiperspirants that temporarily block pores and prevent sweating. As helpful as this may be, our bodies need to sweat to release toxins. The National Cancer Institute suggests that after frequently applying toxic deodorant, the skin absorbs the chemicals resulting in estrogen-like (hormonal) effects. Although there is no evidence, aluminum-based compounds and parabens in antiperspirants could very much contribute to the development of breast cancer.
Well for starters, it’s all-natural! Anything natural will be much better for your health than products filled with a bunch of chemicals. Secondly, your pits need to breathe! Natural deodorants don’t clog your pores with toxins or leave chemical residue like conventional cosmetics. Thirdly, it allows your body to sweat, which is necessary to expel toxins and keep your body cool. Lastly, using natural ingredients will have a positive impact on your health in the long run. If this hasn’t made you want to throw out your conventional deodorants, what’s stopping you?
Just be aware– even “natural” deodorants can contain chemicals too. This is why it’s important to always read your labels– or you can always make your own deodorant. Here is a great DIY deodorant that is 100% natural.
Bottom line, it’s in your best favor to do an armpit detox and give natural deodorants a try. The more you opt for safer, more natural alternatives, the better and healthier you’ll feel. We may not be able to avoid all chemicals in the products we use, but we can at least try.

]]>The craze began with Anthony William, the so-called Medical Medium. His website claims that celery juice is “a powerful and miraculous healing remedy” that can improve your skin, digestion, energy, mental clarity, and mood. William and followers of the Celery Juice Movement believe that drinking plain celery juice on an empty stomach every day has the power to heal acute and chronic illnesses like psoriasis, migraines, and autoimmune conditions. Since May 2019, when Celery Juice: The Most Powerful Medicine of Our Time Healing Millions Worldwide was published, the celery juice trend has blown up. Many people, including celebrities and supermodels, have taken to social media to support William’s claims of the healing benefits of celery juice.
Celery is a nutrient-rich vegetable that contains vitamins A and K, antioxidants, and fiber. Drinking celery juice can be a great way to boost your vitamin and antioxidant levels to reduce inflammation and help fight diseases like asthma and arthritis. On the other hand, juicing the vegetable destroys the fiber that regulates digestion and body weight. One major benefit of drinking celery juice is hydration. The vegetable contains a high percentage of water, and drinking celery in juice form allows you to hydrate your body more efficiently than eating a full bunch of celery. That said, if you don’t love the taste of celery juice, you can get the same hydration by drinking water.
Drinking celery juice could have adverse effects if you have an allergy to the vegetable or are trying to reduce your sodium intake. Potential allergic responses include digestive issues and skin reactions. In addition, one stalk of celery contains 30 milligrams of sodium. This means that a glass of celery juice could contain around 250 milligrams of sodium––the same amount as a medium serving of french fries! So, people who are trying to reduce their blood pressure by watching their sodium intake may want to refrain from joining the Celery Juice Movement. Another potential downside exists when the juice contains added sweeteners, which increases sugar content and can have reverse effects on your health and weight. Like every food and drink, it’s important to be mindful of the ingredients and how it will affect your body.
Celery juice contains essential nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties that help fight a number of diseases. However, there isn’t enough research to support many of the other claims, from weight loss to preventing cancer. If you want to try Instagram’s hottest drink, remember to lay off the artificial sweeteners. To combat the bitter taste of pure celery juice, you can throw celery into a smoothie with other vegetables and fruits, like in this Apple, Celery, and Cucumber Smoothie. Although celery juice may not cure all your problems, it does have nutritional benefits that may be worth incorporating into your diet. But if celery juice isn’t for you, you’re not missing out on much.

]]>Our bodies produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight. The sun’s rays are classified as either ultraviolet A, the less intense rays, or ultraviolet B, the more intense rays. While both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin damage and skin cancer, only the UVB rays are responsible for vitamin D production. When UVB rays hit skin cells, it sparks a reaction that creates the vitamin. Our bodies are able to produce vitamin D most efficiently at midday, when the sun is at its highest point and the UVB rays shine the strongest. Sitting by a window or in a car won’t have the same effect, as UVB rays cannot penetrate windows. Therefore, the best way to boost your vitamin D levels is to get outside right at noon and absorb the sunshine vitamin as efficiently as possible.
While you can find the vitamin in some foods like salmon, tuna, and egg yolks, the easiest way to boost your vitamin D levels is through sun exposure. If you’re planning on spending more than 10 minutes in the sun, remember to apply sunscreen to protect against sunburns that lead to skin cancer. During the winter, it may help to take vitamin D supplements since the sun exposure is less strong. While summer’s still here, take advantage of the sunshine and safely boost your vitamin D.

]]>Organizing your thoughts and writing it in a journal will help give you motivation and a sense of direction. I mean, who doesn’t need a little extra push? As simple as this sounds, executing your goals requires some hard work and dedication as well. While it's great to have long term goals, it's also important to have short terms goals as those are the milestones that help you reach your larger vision.
We are human– we all make mistakes and not everything goes as planned, so dwelling on your problems won’t do anything. However, if you can identify your negative thoughts and change your mindset, you can make a positive turn on your life. Psychologist and author of Mindset, Carol Dweck, highlights the impact of having a growth mindset– where your challenges in life are seen an opportunity to grow and learn, rather than as an obstacle.” This allows you to maintain positive thinking because you are now looking at the glass half full. Ultimately, your thinking can shape how you perceive any situation you come across.
Striving to live a healthy lifestyle is another key to balance. Eating well, staying active, getting enough sleep, and taking your vitamins are just a few things you should incorporate in your life. People tend to mistake being healthy as eating a salad and going to the gym every day, but it goes beyond that. It means incorporating nutritious fruits and veggies into your diet, not overworking yourself and even getting a good night's sleep. Healthy means nourishing your body and mind which will improve your mood and keep your body working the way it should be. Ultimately, strive to become the best version of yourself, live your life, and do what makes you happy– and do it with compassion, conviction, and purpose. There is nothing more important than that.

]]>The best way to protect your hair from the sun is to avoid direct contact by wearing a hat or scarf. This prevents the harmful rays from damaging the strands, so they stay healthy and strong. Just throw on your sun hat and kick back by the pool––worry free!
Regular trims help keep your hair in check because they get rid of brittle and split ends. Getting rid of damaged ends revives the hair’s movement and shine, as well as making it more manageable to style. Most stylists recommend cutting your hair every eight to twelve weeks, so pop in at the beginning and end of the summer to maintain a sleek look all season.
A DIY hair mask can work wonders for sun-damaged hair. Start with an olive oil base to hydrate the hair and reduce frizz. Adding honey helps lock in moisture, while delivering essential antioxidants for damage repair. Bananas are also packed with natural oils that promote shine, and B vitamins that improve overall hair health and strength, to protect against split ends and dryness. Whip up these simple ingredients and apply to damp hair for 30 minutes for smoother, damage-free hair. If masks aren’t your thing, check out our Nourage supplements to get the same benefits of strong, shiny hair.
